Keota prop fails by less than one vote
By Doug Russell, News Editor
KEOTA, Feb. 11 — A proposed $270,000 bond issue for new school buses in Keota failed by less than one vote Tuesday, during an election cycle that also saw some school board members booted and others retained.
The bond issue, which would have provided at least two new route buses for the Keota school district, was given a thumbs up by the majority of those who voted in the district — just not a large enough majority. To pass, the proposition for the bond issue would have had to receive at least 60 percent of the vote. It received 59.95.
“We had people in here with calculators last night, and some of them said it would have taken just one more vote,” said Haskell County Election Board Secretary Marcia Goff. “Someone else said it would have taken less than that.
“Either way, one more vote for would have done it.”
There are 610 registered voters in Precinct 4 and 775 in Precinct 31, many of whom reside within the boundaries of the Keota School District.
Altogether, 265 voters in the Keota School District voted in favor of the proposition, while 177 voted against it.
