Quality counts
Stigler News-Sentinel pressmen win top state award
By Doug Russell, News Editor
STIGLER, Feb. 11 —They’re talented, they’re experienced, they’re dedicated — and they’re the best in the state.
Friday afternoon the Stigler News-Sentinel was announced as the winner in the Oklahoma Press Association’s Print Quality Contest, which means, quite literally, that the newspaper’s printing press operators are the best in the state.
“It also means a lot of hard work,” said Ron Wolfe, plant manager. “There’s a lot of talent over there (in the press room), and the Williams family invests a lot in good pressmen and good equipment, but it takes a lot of work no matter how you look at it.”
The press operators who print the News-Sentinel and Country Star, as well as a variety of other newspapers, have a lot of experience as well — 136 years worth between seven pressmen.
“You can’t forget the prepress department when you’re talking about printing,” Wolfe said. “They do a great job. If they don’t give us something good to work with, it doesn’t matter what we do on the printing side.”
The press operators in Stigler are trained for commercial-quality printing, which is a cut above normal newspaper printing, Wolfe said. “You’re not going to find that kind of quality in most newspaper press rooms, but our guys take a lot of pride in what they do. I tell them that ‘the quality going out the door reflects on everything we do,’ and they take it to heart.
“We’ve got quality, well-seasoned and experienced people, who really care about what they’re doing. That makes a difference.”
